meet katie shipley, PT, DPT

Hi there! I’m Katie Shipley, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Owner of Nurturing Touch Physical Therapy and Wellness. I specialize in pediatrics and more specifically in newborns up to newly walking babies. I have a passion for treating infants with developmental delay, torticollis, neurological disorders, pre/post tongue tie release, and nervous system regulation difficulties. I am also trained in several bodywork/manual therapy modalities including: Craniosacral Therapy (CST), Myofascial Release (MFR), and Craniosacral Fascial Release (CFT-Gillespie Approach). I feel there is a strong connection between the tension in a baby’s body from being in the womb and from birth, and the diagnosis I’m treating them for- so I make sure to address this in my treatments.  I am also a 200 hour certified yoga teacher with certifications in Prenatal yoga and Mama/Baby (postpartum yoga).  I really enjoy offering these classes to the community when I can.

I received my Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2009 from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO. I spent several years working in the acute hospital and rehab settings with the adult population, as well as completing a 9 month residency in Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation before switching to Pediatrics in 2012. I have had 7+ years of experience practicing at Children’s Mercy Hospital (with several years of experience in the NICU), as well as serving several years with Well Bellies and Babies and also with the Holden School District.

I believe the body is wise and can help heal itself if we give it the right tools and care. Watching babies release tension, learn new skills, and share in their pure joy when doing something new is a beautiful experience (and it happens a lot during our sessions!). I love supporting babies and their families on their journey and I feel so blessed to be part of it with them. Parenting is a wild ride at times and we are all in it together.

Fun Facts

  • I have 2 sons, Bennett and Sawyer. Boy Mom life is crazy and teaches me something new every day. I strive to be a present Mom- embracing the wonderful moments and learning how to give us all grace and gentleness during the hard moments.

  • I’ve been doing yoga longer than I’ve been a PT (12+ years). I can do headstands and enjoy physically challenging classes but I find that the most challenging classes are actually the slower ones when I have to work on quieting my mind. It’s a practice for sure.

  • I love to go for walks, hikes, and anything that gets me out in nature.

  • I love supporting local and you’ll often find me at local coffee shops or restaurants. I always love good recommendations!

  • I enjoy traveling and seeing new places- especially the hidden, less touristy gems.

  • I’m a BIG Kansas City Sports Fan…Chiefs, Sporting KC, Royals, KC Current- I love them all!
